Funding basics

What is Grant?

Money awarded for a defined purpose that does not have to be repaid.

A grant is an award of money made by a government agency, foundation, or corporation to an organization for a specific purpose. Unlike a loan, a grant does not have to be repaid, but it does come with obligations: you must use the funds for the approved activities and report on how they were spent.

Most grants are competitive. The funder publishes eligibility rules and priorities, applicants submit proposals by a deadline, and a review panel scores them. Understanding the funder's stated priorities before you write is usually the difference between a fundable proposal and a wasted month.

Example

A community health nonprofit receives a $75,000 grant to run a mobile vaccination clinic for 12 months, with quarterly progress reports required.
