What is Nonprofit?

An organization that reinvests surplus into its mission instead of distributing it to owners.

A nonprofit is an organization formed to serve a public or mutual benefit rather than to generate profit for owners or shareholders. Any surplus revenue is reinvested into the mission.

In the United States, most grant-seeking nonprofits are incorporated at the state level and then apply to the IRS for tax-exempt status. Funders almost always ask for proof of that status before releasing money.
